Proven Winners, New Sidelines: Coaching Moves Could Shape NAL Season X

Three former NAL Head Coaches of the Year and an experienced indoor football coach take on new challenges as teams prepare for the 2027 season.

Hickory, NC — Free agency is officially underway in the National Arena League, and attention is quickly turning toward which players will land where as teams begin building their rosters for Season X.

But before many of those player signings are announced, four organizations have already made moves that could prove just as important.

The Louisiana Rouxgaroux, Colorado Spartans, Omaha Beef and Dallas Apex will each enter 2027 with new leadership at head coach.

Among the group are three former NAL Head Coaches of the Year, championship experience, and coaches who have demonstrated the ability to build and lead successful indoor football programs.

As player movement begins to dominate the offseason conversation, it raises another question:

Could one of the biggest game changers of the offseason already be standing on the sideline?

FRED SHAW — LOUISIANA ROUXGAROUX

The Louisiana Rouxgaroux have turned to a familiar and proven National Arena League coach in Fred Shaw.

Shaw brings significant arena football experience to Louisiana along with one of the league's top individual coaching honors. His success on the sidelines earned him recognition as the 2022 NAL Head Coach of the Year, establishing Shaw as one of the league's proven coaching leaders.

That experience could become particularly important as Louisiana enters a new chapter heading into Season X.

With free agency underway, Shaw now has an opportunity to help shape the roster, culture and identity the Rouxgaroux take into 2027.

For Louisiana, the move isn't simply about hiring a new head coach. It's about putting the football operation in the hands of someone who has already demonstrated an ability to compete at a high level in the National Arena League.

BRANDON NEGRON — COLORADO SPARTANS

The Colorado Spartans are also turning to a coach with an established record of success in the NAL with the addition of Brandon Negron.

Negron's rise through the league has included recognition at multiple levels. He was named the 2023 NAL Assistant Coach of the Year before earning 2024 NAL Head Coach of the Year honors the following season.

Negron also brings recent experience from one of the league's most successful organizations. After taking over the Omaha Beef during the 2025 season, he helped guide Omaha back to the postseason and ultimately into the 2025 NAL Championship Game.

Now Negron takes on a new challenge in Colorado.

The Spartans have shown their ability to compete within the NAL, and bringing in a coach with Negron's league experience gives the organization another opportunity to build on that foundation.

As Colorado assembles its Season X roster, Negron will have the opportunity to establish his own identity and direction for the Spartans heading into 2027.

PAT PIMMEL — OMAHA BEEF

While three of the four moves involve former NAL Head Coaches of the Year, the Omaha Beef are taking a different route by turning to veteran indoor football coach Pat Pimmel.

Pimmel brings years of experience in the indoor game to an Omaha organization where expectations remain high.

The Beef have established themselves as one of the NAL's premier organizations since joining the league. Omaha entered the NAL as an established championship program and immediately continued that tradition, winning the 2024 NAL Championship and earning NAL Franchise of the Year honors that same season.

The organization followed that performance by again being named NAL Franchise of the Year in 2025 and returning to the championship game.

That makes Pimmel's assignment different from simply rebuilding a football team.

He inherits an organization with an established culture, passionate fanbase and expectation of competing for championships.

Pimmel's challenge will be to take that foundation, put his own stamp on the Beef and keep Omaha among the teams competing at the top of the National Arena League in Season X.

COREY MAYFIELD — DALLAS APEX

Perhaps one of the most intriguing coaching moves of the offseason belongs to the league's newest organization.

The Dallas Apex have selected Corey Mayfield to lead the franchise into its inaugural National Arena League season.

And Mayfield already knows something about producing immediate results with a new organization.

In his previous NAL head-coaching opportunity, Mayfield took control of a first-year franchise and quickly turned it into one of the league's top teams. His team finished the 2025 regular season 9-1, won its division and secured home-field advantage for the NAL Championship Game.

The performance earned Mayfield the 2025 NAL Head Coach of the Year award.

But his inaugural-season success didn't stop with an individual award.

Mayfield's team went on to capture the 2025 NAL Championship, completing a championship run in its first season of competition.

Now Mayfield faces another opportunity to help establish a new NAL franchise from the ground up.

Building a new organization requires more than signing talented players. It means establishing expectations, culture, systems and an identity before the team ever takes the field.

Mayfield has already demonstrated within the NAL that a new organization doesn't necessarily have to wait years to become a contender.

Dallas will now see whether he can help create that type of immediate impact once again with the Apex.

WHO WILL BE THE BIGGEST GAME CHANGER?

Over the coming weeks, player movement will understandably take center stage.

Quarterbacks will find new homes. Playmakers will change uniforms. Defenses will be rebuilt. Teams will begin revealing the rosters they hope can carry them to the postseason.

But three of these four new coaching hires already carry one of the league's highest coaching distinctions:

Fred Shaw — 2022 NAL Head Coach of the Year

Brandon Negron — 2023 NAL Assistant Coach of the Year & 2024 NAL Head Coach of the Year

Corey Mayfield — 2025 NAL Head Coach of the Year & 2025 NAL Champion

And in Omaha, Pat Pimmel brings years of indoor football experience into an organization that has established championship expectations.

Four coaches. Four organizations. Four different challenges.
